Trauma affects the body, mind and spirit. People with a significant trauma history frequently notice negative impacts in all aspects of their lives and often can't work. They seek treatment and programming to find relief but are commonly given coping skills/medications to live with the effects and not treatment that resolves their symptoms.

 

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)therapy is highly effective in eliminating the symptoms of  PTSD but is rarely provided to low income Hoosiers.  EMDR training and certification costs are expensive and advanced-level courses to treat dissociation push those costs even higher.  Only a low number of private-practice providers take Medicaid because of the low reimbursement and challenging credentialing process. Those working in the large Community Mental Health Centers and smaller social service organizations aren't supported with funds or training time to get EMDR trained.  

 

Hoosiers lucky enough to find an EMDR therapist that takes Medicaid/HIP often have to wait for long periods of time or are scheduled so infrequently that the work isn't as effective.   Intensive EMDR sessions (2-7 hr sessions) are out-of-pocket for all and out of reach for most low-income clients.  Intensive sessions allow quicker healing and faster relief.  The longer someone lives with untreated CPTSD and PTSD the more risk they are other co-morbid conditions, family issues,  high levels of dissociation, inability to work and suicide.
